General information:

  • The seminar speaker will give a 30 minute presentation followed by a 15 minute question time.
  • The seminar list will be put together by the responsible teacher (as of Spring 2016 Henrietta Nielsen) and sent out at the beginning of each semester.
  • As soon as the seminar list is sent out please check the date you are scheduled to hold your seminar and when you are scheduled to serve as an opponent. Mark them down in your calendar.

Contact the responsible teacher within 2 weeks after receiving the seminar list should you need to change any date. After the initial 2 weeks of the semester, the possibility to change dates will be limited and a good reason must be given.

Attendance information for the PhD students:

  • The seminars are an obligatory part of the PhD education and are meant to broaden your research knowledge and give you practice to review other peoples work and ask questions.
  • Students who have lower attendance that the required will be given extra literature assignments before they are allowed to graduate.
  • PhD students working full time (100%) should attend 75% of all seminars. PhD students working part time should attend seminars to the same percentage extent as they are working. For instance should a PhD student working 70 % attend at least 70% of the 75% required for full time students, i.e. that student should attend at least 52,5 % (0,7x75) of all seminars. 
  • If the PhD student is on sick leave for part of the semester the attendance required can be discussed and possibly lowered. However, for this a medical certificate signed by a doctor needs to be provided.
  • If the student has not attended 75% of the Tuesday seminars, this might still be acceptable if the student have attended a lot of extra seminars held by undergraduate students presenting their work on other days than Tuesdays.
  • The last 3 months before the dissertation the PhD student is excused from attending the seminar series.

Attendance information for undergraduate workers:

  • Undergraduate workers at the department are required to attend at least 75% of the Tuesday seminars.
  • The attendance will be taken into account when the grade for the undergraduate work is determined by the supervisor and the examiner.
  • At the start of the undergraduate work, the student and the supervisor should plan when the student will present his/her work to the Department and discuss possible dates with the teacher responsible for the Tuesday seminar series. 

For the seminar speaker:

  • You should prepare a 30 minute power point presentation describing the background of your project, your results and your conclusions.
  • On the Tuesday before your seminar you should send out an invitation to your seminar to everyone at the department, use You should attach an abstract giving a brief introduction to your seminar.
  • To the opponents you should also send or give a copy of your power point presentation. At the latest the Friday before the seminar the opponents should have a draft of the power point presentation.
  • To the opponents you should also give a suggestion for one article providing some background information connected to your project/presentation.

For the opponents:

  • For each seminar there will be three opponents, two PhD students and one teacher.
  • One of the PhD students will serve as the main opponent.
  • All opponents should take the time to familiarize themselves with the seminar holder’s project (the background of the project, methods used and analysis of data) and prepare some questions.

For the main opponent:

  • The main opponent will also serve as a chairman of the seminar.
  • The main opponent should welcome everyone and present the seminar holder at the beginning of the seminar. Make sure the seminar starts on time.
  • After the presentation the main opponent will be in charge of the question time. This means that you will make sure that the question time keeps to the scheduled 15 minutes and questions are asked by people in the following order:
  1. The main PhD opponent
  2. The second PhD opponent
  3. The teacher opponent
  4. Other students
  5. Other teachers
  6. Other participants
  • After the question time the main opponent should thank the seminar holder and close the seminar session
