Short description of present research

Research in neurochemistry can be described as biochemical, cell- and molecular biological studies of neuronal interactions in health and disease, e.g. Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinsonism, diabetes and neuronal cancer. Additional research directions are the studies of interactions between receptors and ligands, second messenger systems, regulation of gene expression, molecular pathogenesis in case of Alzheimer’s disease, spinocerebellar ataxia and molecular aspects for neurotoxicological processes e.g axonopathy.

The biological models used are primary cell cultures and stable cell lines of neuronal and glial phenotypes as well as multipotent neural progenitor stem cells. Modern genomic and proteomic analyses are also performed together with traditional biochemical techniques. Advanced microscope imaging of signaling processes in neuronal cell cultures is an important tool in the field of molecular neuroscience research.
